ZOOM Tips & Etiquette

 Mute Your Mic

The number one most important piece of ZOOM etiquette: Be sure to mute your mic (lower-left corner of your screen) as soon as you sign on and whenever you are not speaking. This is important and perhaps the most critical tip on this list to avoid background noise and distractions for others.

Even when we are praying together, there can be only one person un-muted at a time or else bedlam breaks loose.

When your mic is muted, you can show your engagement by nodding and smiling.

 Use the name you prefer

Change your displayed name to how you would like people to refer to you. From a desktop, you can right-click on your name and then choose “rename”.

Select a well-lighted and quiet place

You might want to use a headset with an external mic for best hearing and speaking capabilities, though these are completely optional. Be mindful of your background lighting. If you are sitting in front of a window, you may be completely darkened by the light coming through the window. Your overhead light also might need to be turned off or dimmed as well.

Don’t “distract” your computer

Close unneeded applications on your computer to keep the video optimally functioning.

Use the Chat feature

You can ask questions and make comments silently if desired using the “Chat” feature (also on the bottom and center of your screen). This Chat feature allows you to write text to the host, to everyone, or to another individual.

 “Roger, Over”

When you are speaking, let others know that you are finished by saying one of these sign-offs: “That’s all.” “I’m done.” “Thank you.” So that everyone knows you have finished your comments.

 Raise your hand to speak

If you want to speak, physically raise your hand or use the “raise hand” feature that is available at the bottom center of your screen.

 Gallery View

Switching to Gallery View allows you to see all the participants at the same time. This builds community and makes conversations easier.

Bring a soft drink or water

I like to have water or coffee next to me in case my mouth gets dry.

Please, no alcohol.

Eating dinner or a snack can be distracting to others, so if you are eating, please mute your video.
